A backyard pool is more than just a place to beat the Lehigh Valley heat. It creates a personal retreat where memories can be made, friends and family can gather, and you can unwind in style. Today’s pools are filled with modern designs and innovative features that make the process of owning a pool simple and convenient. From smaller footprints to smart automation, here are the top pool trends making waves in the region.
Smaller Pools, Bigger Appeal
We spoke to Cameron Kennedy, owner of Kennedy Design + Build, a local firm which designs and builds luxury outdoor living spaces in the Lehigh Valley. He says bigger isn’t always better when it comes to pools. He says many homeowners are opting for plunge pools, cocktail pools, and swim spas—smaller, more versatile alternatives that fit seamlessly into compact yards while offering year-round use.
"We're definitely seeing a trend toward smaller cocktail pools and swim spas that you can keep open year-round," says Kennedy. "These are great for exercising and entertaining.” we've been getting a lot of requests for cocktail pools and plunge pools."
Kennedy explains that plunge pools and swim spas typically max out at 18 feet by 8 feet, making them ideal for relaxation or light swimming. Cocktail pools, on the other hand, are a scaled-down version of a traditional pool, often measuring 10 to 12 feet wide and 18 to 20 feet long. While they’re not designed for diving, they can include spacious sun decks, ledge loungers, and heating systems to extend their usability throughout the year.

Kennedy also emphasizes that since heating a smaller pool year-round is much more feasible from a cost and energy perspective, these scaled-down pools offer the benefit of being able to be used throughout more months of the year compared to a traditional pool.
Aesthetics: Earth Tones and Seamless Design
When it comes to pool design, softer, more natural aesthetics are replacing the stark, modern looks of recent years. Kennedy notes a shift toward neutral, organic colors like tans, creams, and browns, along with natural stone and artificial turf to blend pools seamlessly into the surrounding landscape.
"People want a calming, organic feel," he says. "We're seeing fewer grays, blacks, and whites, and more greenery being incorporated into the space. Large-format pavers are popular because they keep things clean and open without looking too busy."
Another major aesthetic trend is the move away from traditional tile borders in favor of continuous patterns that extend across the pool floor and up the walls. Many homeowners are also choosing contrasting patterns on steps, ledges, and sun decks to create a customized, modern look.
Chuck Yax, of Frog’s Pool Renovations and Repairs Inc., says materials are playing a huge role in pool updates this season. "We’re seeing more clients choosing sandblasted marble coping, especially in Ice White, for an elegant look at an affordable price," he shares. Colored stamped concrete decks are also trending, offering a wide range of patterns and natural-looking finishes that instantly elevate the space.
Health & Wellness Spaces
Pools aren’t just for swimming anymore, they’re becoming wellness retreats, designed to promote relaxation, fitness, and holistic health.
"Health and wellness spaces are becoming more popular," Kennedy shares. "We’re incorporating cold plunges and saunas into outdoor living spaces so people can have a complete fitness and recovery area right in their backyard."
Beyond just pools, homeowners are opting for landscape designs that prioritize natural elements over vast lawns. "People want gardens instead of large stretches of grass," Kennedy adds. "We use plantings to cover the space, which is low-maintenance and more eco-friendly."
Sun Decks: The Ultimate Lounge Spot
A sun deck, or tanning ledge, has become a must-have feature for those who love to lounge. These shallow, flat ledges extend from the pool’s edge and provide the perfect spot to relax in the water without fully submerging. Sun decks are especially popular in cocktail pools, where they offer a stylish and functional space for ledge loungers, umbrellas, or built-in fountains.
Fire & Water: A Striking Combination
One of the most visually stunning trends in modern pools is the combination of fire features with water elements.
"Fire features add a vertical element and create a focal point in the pool design," says Kennedy. "Fire bowls and fireballs can be placed next to the pool, and we can even design them so that water flows into the fire feature for a dramatic effect."
The contrast of fire and water creates a striking visual impact, making even a small backyard feel more like a luxury resort.
The Versatile Pool-Spa Combo
For those who want the best of both worlds, pool-spa combinations are growing in popularity.
These designs integrate a spa directly into the pool, offering a seamless blend of relaxation and recreation.
Homeowners are also increasingly choosing spillover spas, which create a cascading waterfall effect from the spa into the main pool. This not only enhances the look but also adds the soothing sound of flowing water, creating a tranquil backyard retreat.
Smart Pools: Automation for Effortless Maintenance
Technology is transforming the way homeowners manage and maintain their pools. Pool automation systems, like The Attendant, allow users to control water temperature, chemical balance, and filtration straight from their smartphone.

With features like seasonal settings, custom programs, and an “Away” mode, smart automation makes pool ownership easier, more energy-efficient, and hassle-free.
Pool Surfaces That Shine
Chuck Yax also notes that mini pebble plaster is becoming a customer favorite. This exposed aggregate finish offers a variety of color options, resists staining, and is incredibly durable, giving pools both a custom look and a longer lifespan. “When you combine these materials — mini pebble plaster, marble coping, and stamped concrete — it really transforms the pool into something special, like a Caribbean paradise,” says Yax.
